The livestock sector plays a vital and crucial role in the Indian rural economy. The sector contributes 5.69% of the total GDP and 24.72% of the agricultural and allied at sum prices GDP and supports small and marginal farmers both economically and nutritionally. It plays an important role in employment generation and augmentation of rural income. There is a large gap between demand and supply in respect of milk, meat and eggs and animal resources. There is need to improve both in terms of quantity and quality. The objective is to progreessively reduce the gaps in production of milk, meat and eggs through introduction of production improvement schemes, animal health care and improved management practices. Directorate of Animal Resources and Animal Health was created to give utmost facilities to the farmers, cattle owners, poultry keepers etc. by amalgamation of two erswhile Directorates, i.e. Director of Animal Resources and Director of Animal Health. At present the said Directorate undertakes on the development and management of all types of farm animals, birds, feed and fodder etc. The Directorate also undertakes various schemes for upliftment of standard of living of rural people by imparting training, releasing of subsidy money and vetting of different projects on livestock etc. It is also responsible for proper health coverage of all farms, non-farms, animals, birds and also domestic animals in the State.
